Root canal treatment is a dental procedure meant to save a tooth that has been damaged or infected. Root canal can be performed by a dentist or a specialist called an endodontist. Millions of root canal procedures are performed every year. At Hillfield Pediatric & Family Dentistry, we encourage you to learn more about this treatment and how it can benefit you.
How a Root Canal Treatment Works
The procedure gets its name because the dentist takes infected pulp out of the canals found in the root of a tooth. Though root canal therapy has a reputation for being uncomfortable, modern pain relief techniques keep a patient at ease throughout the treatment. Moreover, the nerves in the teeth of some root canal patients have been destroyed by infection and wouldn’t feel pain anyway, though anesthesia is offered.
The oral surgeon numbs the area around the tooth and isolates the tooth. The oral surgeon then enters the tooth and takes out the infected pulp with tiny files. The root canals will be thoroughly cleaned out and irrigated. A temporary filling is then put in place. The dentist makes an impression of the tooth and sends it to the lab for a crown to be made. It’s usually ready in a few weeks.
If the tooth can’t be saved, the removal of infection makes it safe for the dentist to insert a dental implant. This is made by placing a titanium post in the jawbone, waiting for it to fuse, and then adding an anchor and cementing a crown on top of it.
Once home, the patient should rest, rinse with salt water, be gentle when performing oral hygiene, and take the antibiotics the dentist prescribes. Painkillers should be taken as needed. The patient should make a complete recovery two weeks after the surgery.
